Common Health Risks Associated With Obesity

Obesity is not only a dangerous health condition – it creates and complicates many additional health problems for its sufferers. As a result, obese individuals (those with a body mass index above 30) have a 50-100% greater risk of premature death compared to individuals with a healthy body weight. Furthermore, as body weight goes up, so does the potential for health problems and the risk of premature death. We will now review some of the most common health risks associated with obesity. However, we will also analyze the ways in which weight loss can not only reduce the risk of premature death and certain diseases, but also improve upon many secondary health conditions associated with obesity.

Heart Disease

The prevalence of many types of heart disease – including heart attack, congestive heart failure, angina or chest pain and abnormal heart rhythm – is greatly increased for individuals that are overweight or obese. In fact, obese individuals have a 70% increase chance of coronary artery disease. High blood pressure is also twice as common in obese individuals. Additionally, triglyceride (blood fat) levels are typically elevated in those suffering obesity, while HDL cholesterol – known as the ‘good cholesterol’ – is often present in lower amounts.

Obese individuals have a 75% increased risk in having a stroke, as obesity is often considered a dangerous secondary risk factor for stroke. One of the most common causes of stroke is the condition known as atherosclerosis, a narrowing of the arteries that can lead to arterial blood clots. As atherosclerosis is worsened by a combination of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, lack of exercise and smoking; obese individuals are often at greater risk for stroke.

Studies have shown that a weight gain of just 11-18 pounds can double an individual’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes. And over 80% of diabetes sufferers can be classified as overweight or obese, so there is a longstanding association between obesity and diabetes. Moreover, obese individuals have a 400% increased risk in developing diabetes.

Obesity has been shown to place individuals at increased risk for several types of cancer, including cancers of the colon, gallbladder, prostate and kidneys. In overweight and obese women, the risk of endometrial cancer (a cancer developing in the lining of the uterus) and postmenopausal breast cancer are also increased. In fact, women that gain more than 20 pounds between age 18 and midlife are at twice the risk for postmenopausal breast cancer than women that maintain their weight throughout their adult years.

Gallbladder Disease and Gallstones

The prevalence of gallbladder disease and gallstones is about three times greater in obese individuals. It is also believed that the risk of symptomatic gallstones is directly related to an increase in weight and body mass index (BMI).

Reproductive Complications

In regards to the effects of obesity on pregnant mothers and newborn infants, expectant parents should be aware of several possible complications. Firstly, infants born to obese mothers are more prone to high birth weight. As a result, overweight and obese mothers are forced to undergo a higher rate of Cesarean section deliveries. Obesity has also been linked to a higher prevalence of birth defects, especially neural tube defects such as spina bifida, and complications during the labor and delivery stages. Most startlingly, obesity has been shown to increase the risk of death for mothers and infants during pregnancies and increase the risk of high blood pressure in expectant mothers by nearly 10 times.

For women that are not pregnant but may become pregnant, obesity can cause women to experience irregular menstrual cycles and even infertility. Women that are overweight or obese should also be aware that pregnancy can also place them at higher risk of gestational diabetes.

Osteoarthritis and other musculoskeletal disorders are more common in obese individuals than persons with healthy body weight. In fact, studies have shown that for each 2-pound increase in body weight, overweight and obese individuals experience a 9-13% greater risk for arthritis and similar ailments.

Many overweight and obese people suffer from depression and other psychological or emotional problems. The feelings of unattractiveness, isolation, frustration and failure, which are sometimes at the heart of such depression, can be emphasized when an individual experiences rejection or any type of discrimination in a work, school or social setting. Overall, many overweight and obese individuals suffer from a reduced quality of life, caused not only by numerous health concerns but also the inability to complete some activities or achieve certain goals.

Breathing Problems

Obese individuals are more likely to suffer from breathing problems such as asthma, severe bronchitis and respiratory insufficiency. Also, the condition known as sleep apnea – difficulty breathing and interrupted respiration while sleeping – is much more common in overweight and obese populations.

While obesity can certainly take it toll on many aspects of a person’s health, there is also some good news. For those that are overweight or obese, a weight loss of just 10% of total body weight can begin to have positive health effects. For instance, after an obese individual begins losing weight, the risks of heart disease and stroke are reduced. Furthermore, obese individuals may also be able to lower their blood pressure and blood sugar, improve their cholesterol levels and combat the effects of secondary conditions such as asthma or chronic back pain.

While a weight loss of as little as 10-20 pounds can have positive health effects, an individual’s overall health will continue to improve as they approach a healthier body weight. For anyone trying to improve their health and quality of life by losing weight, it is also important to remember that the weight loss must be maintained in the long term for such positive effects to be possible. Therefore, overweight and obese individuals must be concerned about changing their lifestyles in addition to losing weight, incorporating healthy eating and exercise into their daily routines.

Coffee: Good Or Bad For Your Health?

Is your morning coffee an OK option on your healthy eating plan? If coffee really bad for you or is it actually good?

I get these questions about coffee and health all the time and as a coffee drinker myself; it is smart to take a look at both the good and the bad.

Now, I am not here to tell you that coffee is good for you. If I did, I would be telling only the good side of the story and I am not a politician. I am here to give you the good and the bad and tell you how you can incorporate your favorite coffee or tea into your healthy meal plan.

The Ugly Side of Caffeine: Most coffee and tea contains a lot of caffeine. This is usually the primary reason people make coffee their drink of choice in the morning. Caffeine is a drug like any other and comes with a long list of side effects. Have you ever tried not having your coffee in the morning? Yeah, pass the Excedrin, right? The headache that comes on when you try and kick this habit can be brutal (just like with other drugs) and creating a dependency and addiction like this is harmful to the body.

Second, coffee is extremely acidic. Our bodies function at optimum levels when they are slightly more alkaline (the opposite of acidic). It is best for us to greatly reduce any foods that will drive our body’s pH to be more acidic and eat more foods that are alkaline (like fruits and veggies). An acidic body pH is like a magnet for all kinds of illnesses. Also, an alkaline body has a much stronger immune system, making illness much less likely.

Last but not least, the caffeine in coffee and tea is abuse to your adrenal glands. Your adrenals release your “fight or flight” hormones basically giving you a nice “boost” when needed. Unfortunately, people who drink coffee all day long are consistently beating on their adrenals. This is equivalent of whipping a tired horse even when he is exhausted. Eventually he will not move at all.

The Pretty Side of Caffeine: Coffee tastes oh so yummy and makes me feel great in the morning. (What? Is that not a good enough reason to drink it?)
Many studies have shown that coffee can help in the prevention and treatment of diseases and illnesses as varied as Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, liver disease, skin cancer, Parkinson’s disease and more. Although, I do not believe coffee will be the cure to any of these diseases, many ancient cultures did rely on the coffee bean to cure a long list of ailments. Not to mention, small doses of caffeine can increase performance and mental focus.

Green tea is also a great drink to include with a long list of benefits. If nothing else, green tea is a wonderful source of antioxidants which are important in cancer prevention. Green tea has even been found to raise metabolism and aid in fat burning. Before you go take a green tea bath, its effects are really minor when compared to the effects of sound nutrition and exercise plans. Now that I have said that, do not think you can eat junk food and just wash it down with green tea!

What is a coffee and tea drinker to do?

1. Limit your coffee and tea intake to 2 to 8 cups per day. No, not 2 of each, 2 total. Any more than that is considered as a heavy addict. (I know. I have been there).

2. If you are currently dependent on a lot of caffeine each day, replace 1 or 2 cups of coffee with green tea instead. Green tea has much less caffeine than coffee and will help to combat the ugly detox symptoms.

3. Do not jack up your coffee with sugar, milk, syrup and whip cream (So I guess that means no Starbucks, huh?). Use stevia or xylitol to sweeten and avoid all the empty, harmful calories. A teaspoon of half would not hurt either. Please oh please, do not use any of those flavored creamers. They are closer to someone’s chemistry experiment than they are to real food.

4. Make sure to make your food choices healthy. Avoiding other acidic foods like sugar, artificial sweeteners and processed foods will lighten the acid load on the body.

5. Make sure the coffee you drink is organic. Conventional coffee is filled with pesticides and chemicals and should be avoided at all costs.

There is no need to give up your morning coffee but it is important to drink the right types of coffee, without the added unhealthy extras and as with most things, in moderation.

Understanding and Dealing With Erectile Dysfunction in Young Men

A man is usually in the peak of his sexual activity at 20-30 years, although it is reported that some have a high drive for sex at 40 years. The erectile dysfunction in young men is a common problem today and worse because it affects people at their young age.

It has now been mentioned repeatedly that the major cause is in ‘between the ears’, i.e. psychologically connected. It has also been expressed that many people have normal sexual function possible at their age, but the main problem is that they cannot manage the function as they were younger, say 16 or 18, thus, the cause of worry.

Other cases are blamed on anxiety related to performance, depression and sometimes sadness. Financial stress has also been linked to the problem as is exaggerated teasing of young boys or young men. The latter makes men feel unattractive at an older age.

It is recommended that erectile dysfunction be subjected to early treatment because it may cause stress among victims. Such stress may increase exposure to other problems, psychological or otherwise. If not cured for long, erectile dysfunction in young men is capable of making young men to lose interest in sex activity and family, even when they are not old enough.

People can suspect erectile dysfunction in young men as early when they suspect failure of maintaining an erection for a long time, but noticing it repeatedly. Cures for erectile dysfunction should be advised by a healthcare professional, but most work to boost flow of blood in the penile arteries. Other cures may be initiated with an intention of solving other problems causing such secondary difficulty in flow of blood.

A healthy lifestyle may be the best solution. Better to avoid drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and eating excess of meat and spicy stuff. Leading a peaceful life sans stress and tensions can go a long way in preventing this problem. Eating a good and healthy diet can take you a long way and keep you young for many years. The primary requirement is formation and flow of blood in the body.

Can Penis Bumps Signal an STI?

Often when a man talks about safeguarding his penis health, he’s specifically talking about making sure that he doesn’t come down with an STI (sexually transmitted infection). Certainly, an STI can be bad news for a man and any of his partners. It can severely limit his sexual activities and if not caught and treated in time can (depending upon the specific STI) have serious long-term consequences. Thus, a man may be on the lookout for any abnormalities that could signal the presence of an STI. This raises the question, “What about penis bumps? Could they mean that an STI is present?”

Penis bumps and STIs

The short answer is that yes, penis bumps can be a warning sign that alerts a man to the presence of an STI. But it’s also important to remember that (1) penis bumps are not always associated with an STI, and (2) they are not associated with all STIs.

In general penis bumps aren’t associated with some of the more severe STIs, such as chlamydia, gonorrhea or syphilis. (That’s not to say that a person cannot have one of these conditions and have penis bumps, merely that the bumps are not likely to be a symptom of the infection.) However, penis bumps are associated with several other STIS, including:

* HPV. Also known a human papillomavirus, HPV is the most common STI in the United States. In many cases, HPV does not cause immediate health problems. However, sometimes it is accompanied by the presence of genital warts. These can be very unsightly and most men will want to have them removed. A doctor can prescribe medicines that are typically effective in their removal. Of long term concern is the fact that HPV is associated with an increased risk of cancer, especially in women.

* Herpes. Both herpes simplex1 and herpes simplex 2 can cause outbreaks that resemble penis bumps. These small round bumps resemble blisters and are often quite painful, especially which touched. Fortunately, there are antiviral medications that can be used to help bring an outbreak under control.

* Molluscum contagiosum. Commonly just called MC, molluscum contagiosum are small, often flesh-colored bumps that often appear in clusters. They are benign and do not typically cause pain, except when irritated by excessive friction – which can occur when the penis is sexually active. Treatment usually involves freezing the bumps off. MC can be obtained by means other than sexual interplay; however, the virus that causes it often is passed on during intercourse.

A man with penis bumps that he believes could have an origin with an STI should consult with a doctor immediately.

Of course, while the above STIs can be associated with penis bumps, there are many other causes that have nothing to do with sexual contact. Pearly penile papules, Fordyce spots, ingrown hair follicles, blocked oil glands, food allergies and reactions to chemicals or friction can all describe or bring about penis bumps of one kind or another.

Hopefully, any penis bumps that occur on individuals reading this article will not be symptomatic of an STI. Attending to overall penis health through the use of a superior penis health crème (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil, which is clinically proven mild and safe for skin) can help the penis bounce back from non-STI-related bumps. It’s wise to select a crème that includes a wide range of vitamins, such as A, B5, C, D and E; applied through a topical crème, these vitamins will target the penis directly to receive their multitude of benefits. The crème should also include L-carnitine, which has neuroprotective properties that keep the penis sensitivity at a key level, even after rough handling.
